Objective

Research is undeniably important in advancing the vision of CUCMS to be world-renowned in academic excellence. CUCMS is not new in research. Academic members as well as students are involved in many research activities that is beginning to be recognised by the global research community as evidenced by the increasing number of publication and citations year by year.

However, although the research culture in CUCMS exists, it is still lacking. The research culture is the structure that gives significance and that allows us to understand and evaluate the research activity by members of an institution. An institution’s culture of research is not simply a group of scholars who see the importance of research but it must also provide a supportive context in which quality research is uniformly expected, discussed, produced and valued. In view to fill this vacuum, an effective avenue to showcase and celebrate the CUCMS research culture must be held and one of the strategies is to conduct our inaugural CUCMS Research Week (1st CUCMS Research Week 2017).

The specific objectives are:

  • To cultivate research culture among academicians and students in CUCMS through research activities such as colloquium, poster presentation, workshops, and talks.
  • To foster the interest in science, research and CUCMS among schoolchildren.

The CUCMS Research Week aims to provide a platform for academic members and students to share research output and ideas, as well as to promote research activities and values in CUCMS in line with the 2016 – 2020 CUCMS Thrust to enhance creativity through involvement in market-oriented research, publication and commercialisation.

CUCMS Research Colloquium

The main objective of this CUCMS Research Colloquium (CRC) is to enhance the academic culture and aura of the University. The CRC will broaden the horizon of the existing Postgraduate Research Colloquium (PGRC) as it will be open to participation from a wider audience that includes academicians, postgraduates, undergraduates and external participants. It is an ideal medium to share and disseminate interesting research findings and innovative ideas among participants of similar research interests. Awards of excellence such as Best Poster and Best Oral Presenter will also be awarded to talented researchers.

Research Enhancement Series: Grant Writing Workshop

As a general objective, the Research Enhancement Workshop Series (REWS) aims to equip CUCMS academic staff and postgraduate students with essential grantsmanship. This time the focus will be on Grant Writing. This topic is particularly important as the research environment in Malaysia and globally becomes much more competitive and requires the use of cutting-edge technology and sophisticated analysis. This workshop will equip our researchers with the skills to develop effective grant proposals for use in applying for national and international grants.

Research Talks

As part of the program, the committee has selected several topics to be delivered by keynote speakers to further nurture the research culture of CUCMS. The topics include:

  1. Research: Past, Present and Future
  2. Genetic Research – How does it work?
  3. Cosmetic Research – Reaching beyond
  4. Tips for Impactful Presentation

3 minutes Thesis Competition

Three Minute Thesis competition challenges candidates to present a compelling spoken presentation on their research topic and its significance in just three minutes. This competition is modeled after the successful 3MT competition held worldwide. ®3MT is an academic competition developed by the University of Queensland, Australia. Its success has led to the establishment of local and national competitions in several countries. Therefore in order to keep up with the times, CUCMS is proactive in hosting this competition during Research Week.

Research Image Competition

The Research Image Competition aims to showcase the thriving research in CUCMS through pictures. The research image should inform, engage and intrigue a non-specialist academic audience and offer a visual perspective on current research. This innovative competition has also been held worldwide and the hosting of this competition in CUCMS is hoped to capture the hearts and minds of CUCMS audience to be intrigued by research.

CUCMS Postgraduate Student Progress Meeting

This meeting mainly targeted to CUCMS postgraduate by research mode students by giving them opportunity to develop their presentation skills in front of a more familiar audience and also to provide a medium to share and disseminate interesting research findings and innovative ideas related to research projects conducted from within the University. This meeting is also intended as a means of maintaining a postgraduate community and providing a regular point of contact with other students, supervisors and experts throughout the postgraduate studies. This meeting aims to establish a supportive and friendly environment for students to present and receive feedback on their research. The feedback may assist the students in considering aspects they might not otherwise have addressed. The colloquium also aims to stimulate reflections on students’ motivations, research perspective and future implications of their research.

Essay Competition

This is also a first time event initiative by CUCMS Research Week Committee to provide a platform for finding talented SPM and A-Level students to participate an essay competition related to Health and Medicine topic. This program will be a collaboration with the marketing team that would focus on 10 schools and 10 colleges around Klang Valley and nearby Cyberjaya. This competition can also be a platform to disseminate information regarding programmes offered by CUCMS to schools and Matriculation colleges through engaging them in an essay writing competition.
