East Malaysian Student Determined to Create a Sustainable Platform for Workplace Safety
Originating from a unique background of a blend of Chinese-Kadazan-Dusun ethnicity, Nicholas Wong is a skillful individual with the life goal of enhancing and maintaining workplace safety. He is currently undertaking the Bachelor of Occupational Safety and Health at Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences (CUCMS).
Upon completion of his Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM), Nicholas attended a National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) training session. The young man gained useful experience from the training and discovered his interest in becoming a competent leader in managing workplace safety in the future.
By putting aside the negative statements people spoke about him making the wrong choice, Nicholas fought against the odds with a determination to pursue a Bachelor in Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH). “The job platform on this path provides a more secure income and places an emphasis on maintaining workplace safety among employees. It helps you gain confidence and develops positive leadership traits as you are responsible to incorporate workplace safety among employees”, said Nicholas.
Before deciding on pursuing this pathway, Nicholas had it in mind to join the film industry as it was his foremost interest. However, perceiving the great competition of progressing in the industry and having to face numerous challenges and uncertainties, Nicholas diverted his focus towards workplace safety as he saw it to be a more promising and stable field. He mentioned that “Several workplace accidents have occurred over the years and safety officers have certainly played an integral role in managing these incidents. Taking this course is useful and with credible lecturers emphasizing on leadership as the main aspect of safety, I understand the importance of having a safe working environment”.
The ‘leader-in-the-making’ believes that it is important to develop effective communication skills and have a positive social life to overcome any form of challenge that poses a threat to one’s social engagement especially in meeting new people, joining a new job and adapting to new surroundings.
Though Nicholas’ academic platform differs completely from his hobby, he has not given up doing what he loves most. He shares a vivid passion for photography and filming and spends most of his free time discovering new methods of producing quality videos and photos. Whenever an opportunity strikes, he gives his full commitment to producing commendable work. One of his achievements was the ‘Negara Ku’ short video contest, organized by Orando Holdings’ in conjunction with Malaysia’s 60th Independence Day. As part of his weekly activities, he practices Mixed Martial Arts and attends gym training as he believes it is vital to stay fit.
