CUCMS fetes it's graduates at the 6th Convocation Ceremony

University celebrates a decade of nurturing future leaders at the 6th Convocation Ceremony and looks forward to a bright future. Graduates its first batch of Master of Occupational Safety & Health Management students.

28th October 2015, Shah Alam – Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences (CUCMS) celebrated the achievements of about 400 students at the 6th Convocation Ceremony held today at the Setia City Convention Centre in Setia Alam. The graduating class of 2015 consisted of students from the first batch of the Masters of Occupational Safety & Health Management, Masters in Clinical Pharmacy, Bachelor of Homeopathic Medical Sciences and other undergraduate courses. They also included 159 students from the MBBS programme, 99 students from the Bachelor of Pharmacy programme.

The Master of Occupational Safety & Health Management saw its first graduating cohort of 13 students, a milestone achievement for the Faculty of Safety & Health. The programme is expected to meet the demands of many safety & health inspectors and officers in various organizations seeking a career boost. This is in-line with CUCMS’ aim of providing a top quality education for those seeking lifelong learning opportunities. Workforce surveys in the Klang Valley has identified occupational safety & health practitioners as a highly sought after talent due to the burgeoning development projects in the nation.

The convocation was officiated by the Tunku Chancellor, Yang Teramat Mulia Dato’ Seri DiRaja Tan Sri Tunku Sallehuddin Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah, SPMK., DHMS., DSNS., JP. Tunku Temenggong Kedah and Pengerusi Jemaah Pemangku Sultan Kedah. Also in attendance was Y.B Dato' Seri Mukhriz bin Mahathir, Menteri Besar of Kedah.

Mohamad Amir Ashraf b. Shamsuddin, a Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) student was the recipient of this year’s Chancellor’s Award, the highest award granted to a successful student at CUCMS. He was given the opportunity to address his fellow graduands at the ceremony and gave an inspiring speech exhorting the values of hard work and calling on his peers to fight for their dreams while always upholding the university’s values wherever they may be. The President’s Award, the 2nd highest award was granted to Abdul Muhaimin b. Izham from the Faculty of Medicine.

In addition to Mohamad Amir Ashraf, 10 other students were also recognized for their achievements and were granted special medals and awards. Among them were Loh Sin Toun, Yeo Yoong Hwa and Chong Cui Ying who won the Dean’s Award from the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy and Faculty of Traditional & Complementary Medicine respectively. Meanwhile Sithra Devi A/P Subramaniam from the Faculty of Pharmacy was among 3 recipients of the Industry Award that marks those who are deemed to be future leaders in their respective fields.

In addition to the above, two special awards were sponsored by the industry, further proof of CUCMS’ strong industry links and the employability of its graduates. The Pharmaniaga Pharmacy Excellence Award was given to Azza bt. Mohammed Ghazali and the Homeopathy Gold Medal sponsored by the Malaysian Homeopathy Medical Council was awarded to Chong Cui Ying.

The Convocation is celebrated in the backdrop of the university’s 10th anniversary. Established in October 2005, the university has grown from a small institution offering just 2 programmes; to a successful Tier 5 (Excellent) institution with more than 20 healthcare programmes ranging from diplomas to degree and postgraduate research courses in healthcare. Today’s graduands will join the ever growing CUCMS Alumni which now numbers over 1,500 successful healthcare professionals.

Moving ahead, the university is looking forward to expanding its range of programmes to meet the critical needs of Malaysia’s fast growing healthcare industry. A new purpose built campus is also expected to be operational by 2017 which will see the university’s capacity double to over 7,000 students.
