YBhg. Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Ridzwan Bakar, a consultant cardiologist, was formerly the Group CEO of Pantai Holdings Bhd from 1998 and later served as its Chairman until 2005. Under his guidance the organization expanded to 7 private specialist hospitals and grew to become one of the largest private healthcare provider in Malaysia in the mid-2000s. Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Ridzwan also headed the Board for 10 of the Group’s subsidiaries.
A highly respected leader in the healthcare industry, Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Ridzwan was elected to lead the Association of Private Hospitals until 2004. Under his steadfast guidance the organization grew in influence and helped shape the private healthcare industry in Malaysia. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the initial Health Tourism Initiative by the Ministry of Health.
In recognition of his leadership capabilities, he was later selected as the President of the Asian Hospital Federation, a role which enabled him to establish international hospital management networks between Asian countries.
He graduated from the University of Malaya Medical School in 1975, and was Lecturer and Acting Head of the UKM Medical School until 1982. YBhg. Tan Sri was appointed the Secretary of the Academy of Medicine Malaysia, the foremost body for medical specialists, for over 10 years. He was also the External Examiner for UKM and the London Royal College of Physicians.
Since 1982, YBhg. Tan Sri has been serving as a consultant cardiologist at the Pantai Medical Center in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. He was trained in hospital management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, the National University of Singapore Business School, and the Mayo Clinic USA. He was also the Class Leader for the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program in Malaysia in 2003.
For services in healthcare to the nation, he was conferred the Panglima Jasa Negara (1999) and the Panglima Setia Mahkota (2011) by His Majesty the King of Malaysia. YBhg. Tan Sri brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Board of Governors and is committed to guiding Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences to become a world class, healthcare focused university.
YBhg. Tan Sri was born in Alor Star, Kedah and is married with three children.
