About the Centre
In line with the university’s 5-year Strategic Plan, the Centre for Graduate Studies, Research & Commercialisation was established in 2010 to provide and academically challenging prostgraduate programmes and encourage innovation through research, development and commercialization. This is in keeping with the university’s belief that institutions of higher learning should not only teach established knowledge but must also generate new knowledge.
The centre also serves postgraduate students and lecturers by providing assistance and training to enable them to excel academically and to be able to conduct high quality research. It administers 4 postgraduate research based programmes alongside another 3 coursework-based programmes that are managed directly by the Faculties.
The centre is a focal point for research at the university and it serves to ensure that there are sufficient research funding and resources available to drive the university’s research objectives. The centre is also responsible for driving the university’s research & commercialization partnerships both locally and on the international level.
About the Director
Dr. Muhammad Najib bin Mohamad Alwi
Dr. Muhammad Najib bin Mohamad Alwi graduated from Universiti Sains Malaysia with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 1992. In 1999, he completed his MSc (Clinical Psychiatry) at Imperial College, London and qualified as a psychiatrist from the Royal College of Psychiatrists, London. He received his PhD in 2009 from University of Sydney, Australia.
He began his medical career as a lecturer and psychiatrist at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kubang Kerian in 1999 where he worked for 9 years. He then moved to CUCMS in 2009 to join the Faculty of Medicine as an Associate Professor in Psychiatry. He was seconded to the Centre for Graduate Studies, Research and Commercialization (CGSRC) to become the Deputy Dean in 2010, and was promoted to Director in 2015.
His main research area is Cognitive Rehabilitation for Schizophrenia and has published in several areas of psychiatry including cognitive assessment of mental illness, metabolic syndrome associated with psychotropic medication, and disaster mental health.
Assoc. Prof. Dr Muhammad Najib also serves as a Honorary Lecturer in Psychiatry at University Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Center (PPUKM), Kuala Lumpur and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UNISZA, Kuala Terengganu, and is a Visiting Consultant Psychiatrist at An Nur Specialist Hospital (Bangi) and Al Islam Specialist Hospital (Kuala Lumpur)..
